Yes you can, there are 2 windows sidebar options i recommend for you. It's completely FREE!

1st is Thoosje sidebar, its a great sidebar but it's not the original windows sidebar that you can add gadgets. info can be found here: http://thoosje.com/sidebar.html

2nd is Windows Sidebar for XP (the original windows vista sidebar), but you need to install something for it to work on xp because windows sidebar is designed for windows vista..
you will install VAIO XP, you will need to have IE 7, WMP 11 and the Vista fonts.. if you dont have any of these, Windows Sidebar won't work.

Look at this forum for questions and answers.. you can also download it here: http://www.wincert.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=485

When i'm on xp, i use windows sidebar and it works great.. but now i'm on vista! hehe

you can get something similar to vista sidebar in the shape of "yahoo widgets" from http://widgets.yahoo.com/
these are basically the same as the sidebar but instead of being at the side they can be arranged anywhere,so by placing them all at the side you can make a sidebar anyway
also as they come from yahoo you also know they are going to be safe and spyware free
while on the subject of vista apps for xp why not try the 3d tilted windows program for xp called topdesk(http://www.otakusoftware.com/topdesk/),this is a excellent program that lets you scroll between windows just like the way you can in vista
also from stardock ,the company that gave us windowsblinds, comes a excellent application called windowsfx(http://www.stardock.com/products/windowfx/),this lets you minimize and maximize your windows in a much more fluid way,and also makes your windows transparent, just like vista
have fun with these
good luck mate
