Hi

Your battery may not have been dead, check the voltage across the battery. If it is over 12 volts then miss the following alternator check and go onto the starter motor check.

Disconnect the negative lead from the battery, disconnect the live wire from the alternator (make sure you insulate the alternator wire with insulating tape so that it does not short against anything), reconnect the battery negative lead, and then try to jump start the car again. If tit works then you have a faulty alternator.

If not, then it could be a problem with the starter motor. Disconnect the battery negative again, reconnect the alternator live, and then reconnect the battery negative, and then charge the battery.

Grab a volt meter and make sure that there is battery voltage at the large red wire on the back of the starter motor at all times.

Then check that there is battery voltage at the smaller switch wire when the igntion key is turned all the way on to the cranking position. The switch voltage should be zero when the key is anywhere other than the cranking position.

If there is no switch voltage then you probably have a fault in the ignition switch.

If there is no voltage at the larger red wire then you need to follow the wire all the way back to the battery and check its condition, including its security at the battery.

If all the voltages are there then you need to replace the starter motor.

Good luck, and if you need any more clarification then mail me.

Cheers

Geordie

Classic example of leaving something on, lights etc, over use or window heaters.
The click is the solenoid closing but there is not enough power in the battery to turn it over.
Recharge your battery.
Older cars can be jump started.
Get some folk to push you, when it has a bit of momentum select 3rd gear and ease it into gear.
When the engine starts, select neutral and rev the engine to get it settled down, drive to a parking place and run the engine for 10 minutes to charge the battery up again

Have the battery charged and checked 1st. Then the alternator and starting system. An automatic transmission vehicle is unable to be "bump started" or "push started". This only applies to manual transmissions.
