I don't think he should be sacked for taking the cat to work. But I am sure that one episode saw him going home and falling asleep in front of the fire before he had finished his delivery, which is a sack able offence, however with good union representation he should be able to get off with a formal stage 1 warning otherwise the whole Plasticine post office would have had to go out on strike until he was reinstated ( but not the cat as he's behind in his union subs).
As to the second part of your question, other things which shouldn't be take to work , especially the post office are Anthrax and bomb making materials.
