Too much oil can be a bad thing. The crankshaft will essentially froth it up, and this decreases it's lubricating ability. Also, a car is not supposed to burn oil. If your car is burning oil, it needs some fairly significant work.
So, drain oil until its down to an acceptable level (keep checking the dipstick.) Or, since it will be a messy job (trying to put the drain plug back in when the stream is going full blast), drain it all and start over.

Knowing what kind of car it is would help!!
A little excess oil in the crankcase won't hurt anything. We are talking no more than a quart more than recommended. If you filled it up literally, DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE!
Best way to do it is to go get the appropriate amount of oil (in a different car, preferably) and drain the oil out, and refill it to the correct amount. A little extra (1/2 quart, in some case a quart, depending on the engine) won't hurt anything. Most auto manufacturers desing a "margin for error" into the dipstick marking in most car. In my older V8 Dodges I can run an extra quart and not hurt a thing. I own a 2000 Neon with 120K miles on it. It gets 5 quarts of Mobil1 at every oil change, but it only calls for about 4.5. Still runs fine after 7 years and over 100K miles.
But, just to be safe, and for your peace of mind, drain the oil and replace it with 4-5 quarts of fresh oil. Then you can be sure.
Most 4 cylinder engine take anywhere from 3.5 to 5 quarts. So put four in and check the dipstick. If it's a little low, add a half quart, if it's a little high, then leave it alone. If the lowest oil level is in BETWEEN the two little marks on the dipstick, you should be fine.
Keep the extra quart for top offs in the future or the next oil change.
If you are that worried about it, take the advice of some of the others in here and take it to the nearest oil change place and have them do it.

Simply put a large mouthed plastic measuring cup under the car with a medium sized funnel in it . Start to loosen the drain plug in the bottom of the crankcase oil pan until a small stream of oil starts to run out. Fill the 1 cup measuring cup and check your oil level. If it's still too full grain a little more off.
Always check the oil capacity of your crankcase before changing oil. To prevent "dry starts" fill your oil filter with part of the total fill capacity. Don't bother if the filter is parallel with the ground. All others fill the filter with motor oil before threading it back on the mount.

You must not drive it if you overfilled by more than half a quart. If you use a Pela oil extractor, you don't need to crawl underneath the car and open the drain plug with a wrench to drain the oil.

As already stated, the mild is maximum in many circumstances tied to the stress. as quickly as the oil pump starts off to allure to air, the stress drops and an electric powered swap triggers the mild telling you to characteristic oil. while the oil stress is important to stress oil into the lifters, cam, bearings, and different moving aspects. the point additionally performs a important roll. The crank, working interior the oil pan splashes the oil with the aid of the decrease area of the engine offering greater lubrication. Letting the oil point drop to the place the mild triggers promotes untimely placed on on friction aspects. Letting the engine run too in many circumstances, or too long, with low oil stages finally ends up in worn bearings, lose rods, flat cams, ..., to call some issues. All of that are high priced to repair. in my view i attempt to envision the oil point a minimum of as quickly as a week (interior the previous wrecks Ipersistent). additionally it rather is stated you preserve from blending oil manufacturers. Manufactures, so as to create a "greater effective" oil, use ingredients. those ingredients do no longer continually paintings nicely whilst blended throughout manufacturers. once you get the oil replaced provide up by making use of the shop and %. up some greater quarts of an identical form and weight to maintain interior the motor vehicle to characteristic later. $3.50 on the shop continually beats $5.50+ on the AM/PM or provide up N' shop. success favors the arranged.

How much is to much? if it is only one quart do not worry if it is more than that and it is way over the fill mark you need to drain some.

DO NOT start the car with it overfilled. If you drain it off to the safe point, it will be fine unless you have started it.
