I had this question in a recent homework booklet. I understand they use a certain amount for energy, being living, but i need another answer as well. Thanks.

During the day, plants produce sugar to store energy from the sun. (They produce oxygen and take in CO2 from the air.)

During the night, they respire much like we do, creating CO2 and using the energy stored in the sugar.
