Most people here are correct when referring to consumer "cassettes & cassette players".
HOWEVER:
High quality reel to reel tape offers a better sound than CDs. This analog alternative brings a "warmer" & more life-like pitch to the sound.
This is why MANY professional studios DO NOT record digitally but on very high quality tape devices.
It then goes from tape to digital format & then to CD.
Quality is lost from the original tape recording to the final CD product (however minimal).
Longevity is better on CD simply because the material is more durable than tape.

The machine doesnt "eat" tapes.
No degradation of quality from multiple uses w/ CD's
No drop outs w/ CD's
Shuffle mode not availalbe w/ tape
CD's are less bulky
Many people used to cut segments of a tape and splice them together--that was easier

tapes pro: cheaper, easy to record,
con: but worse quality music, you cant put music from a tape on a computer, you have to rewind them, cant skip to next song, eventually the tape wears out
cd: pro, good quality music, you can skip songs, no rewinding, can be used in lots of systems (cd player, computer, dvd player, playstation ect)
con: easily damaged,
