I think they are called Flying Fish. My dad has one that looks like he has wings and just want to know where they come from?

Hello.
The Exocoetidae or flying fishes are a marine fish family comprising about 50 species grouped in 7 to 9 genera. Flying fish are found in all the major oceans, mainly in warm tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Their most striking feature is their pectoral fins, which are unusually large, and enable the fish to take short gliding flights through air, above the surface of the water, in order to escape predators.

I don't know if you can find them in stores or not.
Hope that helps. Take care and God bless.

Always look at the bright side, and the positive of everything.

here are 52 different documented species of flying fish. They can be found in the waters around Tonga, Fiji, the United Kingdom, Azores Islands, Australia, Barbados, India, California, Caribbean, and even Canada. These are not the only places flying fish live, and for all we know there are more species yet to be discovered. There are two-winged and four-winged flying fish and black-winged fish to name just a few. Four-winged flying fish are common in the North and South Atlantic oceans, and black-winged flying fish inhabit both Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Yes, CINDY LOU, there is a flying fish!

True "flying fish" (yes, they jump and glide, not fly) are natives of the Atlantic & Pacific. The term actually refers to about 50+ species.
Most aren't suitable for an aquarium.

One similar fish I've seen - but requires a VERY large (180+ gallon) tank is the Flying Gurnard, a native of the Indian Ocean. These do most of their "flying" underwater: http://www.oceanes.com/shop_image/animal/Flying%20gurnard.jpg http://www.ilap.com/sandra/gurnard.jpg- this is a saltwater species, as are the true flying fish.

Something similar, but more manageable for a home freshwater aquarium is an African butterfly fish, from(where else?) Africa: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1593 These only need about a 30 gallon tank, and don't fly - the fins just make them look like they could. These are predatory, so they can't be kept with anything they could eat.

Flying fish are from the ocean and I'm not sure where I think just about all over. They have been around for millions of years. Other people just don't know. They exist and do fly (glide) out of the water to avoid preditors, and swim in large schools.

Ask your dad where he got it from or go to the Aquarium shops to ask about the flying fish. Good luck :)

I saw in California as a young girl with parents--in the ocean, a boat tour--actually going out to Catalina Island. Really neat! He is right, they are real!

Fish can jump out of the water, but they sure as hell can't fly.
