People are getting more dumber and dumber these days. They can't even spell simple words like "banned" right. They spelled it "band". Isn't that so stupid? What happened to the good old English we all used to have? What happened to everyone?

Some people can't even spell "fun" correctly. They can't even spell "hero", "said", and "a lot" correctly.

People are getting stupider and stupider day by day. Grammar is also getting down! What in the world is happening?

While I agree wholeheartedly that the use and misuse of the English language on Yahoo Answers is abominable, I don't know that I necessarily concur that people are getting dumber. I think that unfortunately the computer and its informal forms of communication have legitimized shorthand spelling variations and abbreviations that have become almost acceptable in certain mediums. Sometimes I think some of it can be attributed to typos, rather than actual inability to spell correctly. I know it bothers me much more when there are run on sentences that interfere with my ability to comprehend the questions. In many cases in this particular forum, we must also acknowledge that there are people for whom English is not the native language. For the most part though, I think that knowledge is much less the issue than lazy typing.

Also, FYI everyone, "stupider" is indeed a word, although it does sound akward to the ear at times. Check your dictionaries.

In my case, I send sms (text message) most of the time to my friends and I have no choice but to shortcut the words since there is a limit of characters per send. After like years of texting, I sometimes forget to spell out the whole word properly when I am writing a formal letter or something. But this does not mean I am poor in grammar or spelling. People just make mistakes. And just because a person was not able to spell a word right doesn't mean he's stupid.

Are people getting stupider? This sentence is worded wrong. It should read, " Are people becoming more stupid?" Do not try to teach english. There are countless mistakes in your spelling and grammar.

1. People are getting more dumber and dumber these days.
2. They can't even spell simple words like...
3. Isn't that so stupid?
4. People are getting stupider and stupider...
5. Grammar is also getting down!

je t' adore, do not call me a f***ing idiot unless you are an english professor.

Stupider is not a word to the person who is ranting and raving it is.
One syllable adjectives take "-er/-est". Adjectives with more than one syllable take more/most (eg., more beautiful). There are exceptions to the one syllable rule, such as happy (happier). Unfortunately, stupid isn't one of them. Having said that, there are those who use "stupider", albeit incorrectly. This is proper english. Not slang.

To respond to the people who said "stupider" is not a word... it is. Look it up in a dictionary. But "more dumber" is definitely not grammatically correct...and that's pretty amusing, considering you mentioned the downfall of grammar in your question.
Oh, and when you put a word in quotations immediately followed by a comma, the comma goes inside the quotations, for example: "said," "hero," and "a lot." Get it?
I'm not even going to bother to answer your question. ;)

I dont think they are getting stupider, most people are in a hurry and either make up their own quick spelling or they dont see the mistakes. I do it some times, I will spell ahve when i ment HAVE....maybe we should slow down.

You know, there is a really good maxim that allows me to live worry free, and happy.
This is the secret.
No one or, no thing, can MAKE me do anything. I do it myself. So quit obsessing about people who can't spell. All it does, apparently, is make you mad..and for what good does it do? As long as I can read it I do not go looking for trouble. Good advise... Live long and prosper.

Not being a godley speller my self.

Have you ever stopped to consider that it may take a person of a weak mind and lack of creativity to spell a word the same way ever time??

I think part of the problem is that grammar is no longer taught in school. I am appalled when I find letters sent home from my childrens' school that have grammatical errors in them. These are the people who are supposed to teach my children?!
