(1945 - 54). The war developed as a sequel to the struggle (1946 - 54) between the French, who were the rulers of Indochina before World War II, and the Communist-led Vietminh, or league for the Independence of Vietnam, founded and headed by the revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh. Having emerged as the strongest of the nationalist groups that fought the Japanese occupation of French Indochina during World War II, the league was determined to resist the reestablishment of French colonial rule and to implement political and social changes.
Following the surrender of Japan to the Allies in august 1945, Vietminh guerrillas seized the capital city of Hanoi and forced the abdication of Emperor Bao Dai. On September 2 they declared Vietnam to be independent and announced the creation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, commonly known as North Vietnam, with Ho Chi Minh as president. France officially recognised the new state, but the subsequent inability of the Vietminh and France to reach satisfactory political and economic agreements led to armed conflict beginning in December 1946.

French Indochina had been a French territoral holding since the late 1880's. During WWII, when France was captured by Germany and the puppet Vichy Government was in control, Japan took heavy influence in the area to help with it's fighting in China and Burma. After war's end, France was liberated and began to regain control of it's territorial possesions. Communist Nationals, who had previously been supported with weapons from the U.S in it's war against Imperial Japan, had still controlled a good portion of the country. Under the new leadership of Ho Chi Minh, they persuaded the king to abdicate his throne and they declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. French soldiers came and fought the First Indochina War, a major defeat, in which the country was partitioned into two nations in 1954 at the Geneva conference. The north was supported by communist China and Russia, and the south was supported by the NATO powers. The corrupt southern government under Ngo Dem Diem persecuted many Vietnamese, and he refused to hold democratic elections as agreed in the Geneva conference. The U.S, fearful of the domino effect of the spread of communism, declared that it would support Vietnam to the bitter end. But the unpopular Diem government led to a CIA sponsored assassination. Three weeks after the coup, President Kennedy died and was suceeded by Johnson, who began to immediately escalate U.S involvement. Continued NVA attacks and the American refusal to leave the country led to what was at first a colonial attempt at independence to a struggle to contain communism.

Vietnam was split in two, with communists in the north and capitolists in the south. The communists decided to invade the south and America wanted to stop the spread of communism, so we joined in to help the capitolists.
