I have a degree in Anthropology plus some graduate coursework in Humanities. However, I am no longer a graduate student. I am looking to make a career change and would really love to work in either of these fields. Could I find a decent paying job doing something in one of these fields if I've never worked in this industry before? I have operation management skills and have worked in the property mangement field for the last six years.

Without going on for additional education at the masters level you will start at entry level jobs if you enter at the direct service level. Now if you can enter in a management capacity that does not involve program operations you might, though again without an MBA or MPA you will be competing with people who do. You may be able to get a job in a Dept. of Social Services but you will start at the bottom of the chain given that you do not have a degree in social work. If you are serious I would go on for an MSW. DA

Define decent paying job...LOL..In all seriousness, you probably cannot access the social worker's guild....they've got it tightened up to such an extent that unless you have graduated from 'an accredited social work college' you don't qualify. It's a sad and unjust thing; but, they've done it. What these 'diploma mills' are turning out are " Im only here to help you; but you have to do it yourself"..you have to because, you see...I have darn little clinical skills and have been indoctrinated into a mind set that makes me worthless as an agent for change. Moreover, if you speak of "healing of the soul" (read, psychotherapy) I will just look at you blankly.

Obviously, I loathe them. Just as much a reality, it would be nice to see smart, energetic people; who have mastered psychotherapy enter the field and make a difference; but, I don't think it is going to happen.

Good luck to you..Research in your state of the onion (read union) as the guild may not have taken completely over yet.

If I were young and energetic, I would start a grass roots movement to demand better than what the social workers are purveying to the public. Perhaps, you are the one to start it!

human services or social work are really not high paying jobs, but it really depends on what exactly is motivating you? are you in it for the money, or because of the fact that you want to help people? if you are in it for the money only, then you might want to find another line of work. if you are in it because you want to make a difference in someone's life, then go for it.
