At least as early as Egyptians at during their heyday. I have heard and read that some psychologists and other observers of things psychic have said it is an attempt to mimic another part of the female anatomy to be more "attractive" to males. I do not know the reason personally.

I was told it started in Egypt and was worn by prostitutes. I believe they used red dye, berries, and wine to color their lips red. Not sure if it is accurate, try looking up the origin of lipstick and see what you find.

Probably to make them look more luscious in the eyes of the opposite sex. As women were "insuperior" to men, they were expected to please them and, apparently, redder lips worked.
