These soaps were made from a natural cleanser called saponin, which is extracted from the soaproot or soapwort plant. Animal fats and fragrant oils were added to the formula. These soaps were used for cleaning the household as well as bathing.

Ingredients -- 1.Soap - wort ,is a plant that lathers when you put it in water, it has cleansing properties,2. Herbs to cleanse the skin and enhance the aroma of the soap, 3. Animal fat ,vegetable oils for solidifying the soap and lanolin for moisturizing the skin, They coloured soap with vegetables such as onion, beetroot and carrots.
These ingredients were prepared and blended to make soap..

In the 19th century people on the U.S. plains and generally in the West ,saved ashes from fires to be mixed with animal fat to create soap. It does work, I have tried it, but will almost take the skin off of you. I believe there is a product still on the market - Fels-Naptha - that is basically the same as the 19th Century stuff.

Actually i hear it was the Babylonians that made soap around 3500 b.c. Soap could have been made out of fat or herbs
