Lucid dreaming (lucid from Latin, lux "light") is the conscious perception of one's state while dreaming, resulting in a much clearer experience and sometimes enabling direct control over the content of the dream, a realistic world that is to some degree in the control of the dreamer. The complete experience from start to finish is called a lucid dream.

Lucid dreams occur during REM sleep after the person becomes conscious and aware of dreaming within the dream.

(lucid from Latin, lux "light") is the conscious perception of one's state while dreaming, resulting in a much clearer experience and sometimes enabling direct control over the content of the dream, a realistic world that is to some degree in the control of the dreamer.[1] The complete experience from start to finish is called a lucid dream. Stephen LaBerge, a popular author and experimenter on the subject, has defined it as "dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming."[2]

LaBerge and his associates have called people who purposely explore the possibilities of lucid dreaming oneironauts (literally from the Greek ονειροναύτες, meaning "dream sailors").

The validity of lucid dreaming as a scientifically verified phenomenon is well-established.[3][4] Researchers such as Allan Hobson with his neurophysiological approach to dreaming have helped to push the understanding of lucid dreaming into a less speculative realm.

A lucid dream is a dream in which you realize that you are dreaming, which in turn allows you to somewhat control the dream. They don't usually last very long once you've realized it's lucid, because the awareness has a habit of waking you up.

A lucid dream stores creativity. Lucid dreams allow the dreamer to be inspired. They enable an especially creative person to reach inside the depths of their inspiration and creative potential. When you are dreaming a lucid dream, you are aware that you are dreaming it.

jimgdad's answer is right- thumbs up.
A lucid dream is only being aware that you are dreaming while you are still in the dream. It's more fun controlling things in your dream if you know your dreaming, but it's not the same thing. You can control things in your dream and not even know you're dreaming and vise-versa.

I am no expert, so please understand I am speaking from a position of profound ignorance, but I understand a lucid dream to be a very vivid dream in which the dreamer retains the ability to influence the events, and the course the dream takes.

lucid dreaming is simply dreaming while being aware you are dreaming. You can think of lucid dreaming as being conscious while dreaming. If, by chance, during a dream it suddenly dawns on you that you are dreaming, then you have experienced a lucid dream, regardless of whether you have been able to attain control of your dream.
