When you save the file, there is an option for the format under the file name.
Hit the little button on the right side that drops down all the options and you will be able to select .RTF or "Rich Text Format".
Basically, it is just a universal formatting type.

A Rich Text Document is a document saved as a file of type "RTF" or "Rich Text Format". It is a type of document that preserves boldface, italics, and other formatting, but is not dependent on what program opens it. A Microsoft Word document saved in this format could be opened by WordPerfect, or vice versa, for example.

Microsoft Word documents can only be opened by Microsoft Word. Rich Text documents can be opened by almost any word or text processing program.
Open your document, then at the top of the screen, click on "File > Save As..." When the dialog box comes up, where it says "Save as type", click on the little arrow and select "Rich Text format (.rtf)".
Good luck!
p.s. I second the recommendation of the previous poster ... Open Office is great!

The Rich Text Format is similar to a .txt file but includes formatting for fonts etc. It is editable by most applications and OSs. For assignments you may want to use PDF formats since they are not editable by normal word processors. This ensures that your document is readable but not changeable by other people. They also are much smaller documents usually. However PC systems can't directly Save As a PDF unless you have Office 2007. Macs have had this ability for a long time.

Hi Misty,
Open the document in Word then from the file menu select "save as" and in the "save as type" drop down box select rich text format (rtf).

When you use "save as" to save your document, look for "rich text" in the menu options. It's a text document that has a minimal amount of formatting.

All the other posters were correct. I thought it odd a professor doesn't have Word! However you might want to advise him to get OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org This will open and create documents, spreadsheets etc compatible with MS Office, and it's free.
