What you are describing is known as braxton hicks contractions (which are TOTALLY normal) and occur throughout pregnancy. It's the body's way of practicing for labor and it can start as early as 8 weeks into pregnancy. It could also be round ligament pain. That is basically the discomfort that you feel in your inner thighes, hips, butt, and lower back area. What causes the shooting pains is that the pelvic region is stretching itself to accompany the growth of your baby. Your spine also has to stretch which is what causes back pain as you progress further into your pregnancy and your baby gets larger. This is all totally normal. It could be that the baby is moving around but it is most likely just discomfort related to round ligament pain. In any case you shouldn't worry. That's totally normal.

If you are 18 weeks pregnant, your baby starts to produce feces and stores it in the colon. Just think -- he or she is starting to save up for all of those diapers you will be changing! Other fetal development occurring around week 18 of pregnancy includes the following:

The skeleton can be clearly outlined in the ultrasound of the fetus
Ears stand out from the head
Lanugo (soft, fine hair) covers the entire body
Pads (the fatty, soft parts) are forming on the fingertips and toes
The eyes are looking forward rather than out the sides of the head
If your baby is a boy, his prostate gland is beginning to develop
Your baby's bones begin to harden, or ossify -- keep up that calcium!
Your baby's taste buds are beginning to develop, allowing them to distinguish sweet from bitter.

Your baby is hearing fairly well during week 18, because the bones in the inner ear and the nerve endings from the brain will have developed. This means that your baby will hear sounds such as your heartbeat and blood moving through the umbilical cord.

It might be a muscle pain or it could simply be gas. It is probably too soon for the baby to be kicking. If the pain continues, call the doctor and set up an appointment.

Sounds like ligaments stretching. Nothing to be alarmed about. I am sure you are going to be feeling movement very soon!
