1st you actually do some research...use keywords to search the web, u.s. slavery laws, u.s. trials in 1800...then find a story of one of the trials that actually interest you. Your first sentence and/or paragraph could be you retelling the story or the outcome of a trial. Then you fill out the paper with laws, why they were passed, who was involved and how it affected the people and country.
Make sure you enjoy it because then you'll remember it for future use in some other type of paper or academic endeavor.

Start with your history book and that specific time period. Go to the library and online and look at items like slavery laws of the time, there are many of them. Look up court cases dealing only with slavery and related issues. Just using keywords like slavery and 1800's will give you way too much info for a long paper. Try just focusing on a particular law, like the buying or selling of slaves to give your paper focus if you can.

Try looking for books on this subject at your local library or look it up on the internet. Both should give you the info you are looking for. It sounds really interesting. I live in the south now & there's so much history here, to research. Good luck on your paper.
