Sorry I accidently closed this -- It is just my observation but it seems that a lot of people who are gay tend to take the position that everyones opinion towards gay people (especially if its against it) is automatically a gay bashing opinion....what do you think - honestly...

Pete, my reason for saying that you cannot change skin is because so many people try to equivilate "race" and being GLBT. It is NOT the same - you cannot change something physical like skin color - you are born with it physically attached to you. Sexual preference is in the mind. The mind creates desires for whatever gender a person prefers - and you can change that. If it were not the case you would not have people who were previously gay or lesbian and are now heterosexual. I have no problem with people who have an "affinity" for the same sex - one of my good friends is a Lesbian - I accept who she is but I dont have to accept her lifestyle. What makes me mad is how the media makes such a big fuss if about any NEGATIVE comment concerning gay people as if people in this society are not allowed to state their opinion and what they believe. Look how big of a fuss people make just from saying that being Gay is immoral in (reference to the military man who stated his opinion)......

Dash, so because you are gay - generally speaking - you want society to make sure that we recognize you and your contributions - because you are gay??? No I dont agree with that, just like I dont agree that school books should be changed to include contributions made by gay people. We are human first and then everything else. Blacks, Mexicans, asians -whatever are recognized for their contributions because of the barriers against them based of their SKIN COLOR not SEXUAL PREFERENCE. Like I said before there is a difference between skin color and SEXUAL PREFERENCE. They do not equate! Let me put it this way - say for instance I were a lesbian and I discovered or invented something this world has never seen - how would it look to you for a history book to read "Divin4Dollars was the first Lesbian to discover this or that.." as if my sexual preference plays a role in my intellect?? I think NOT! Because I love men will not make me any more recognizable then the next person

Laurel, G - Im a believer in Jesus Christ. it is just MY, no one elses opinion that if anyone that is in Christ, they can do ALL things through him. Just like a murderer can be forgiven and changed so can someone who is homosexual. Do your research - there are folks out there who are believers and made an effort to change their lifestyle because of their belief in Christ Jesus. But everyone doesnt believe in Jesus and those that do who are gay have convinced themselves that it is alright in the sight of Gods eyes. society, the media, bleeding hearts of the like have made it easier to do just that instead of the CHURCH, each of us as believers, standing on the word of God and calling/seeing sin for what it is. I myself am full of sin and can only go to God on my behalf - so Im not judging anyone. Be gay all you want to, hey it is your life. But dont expect me to have it shoved down my throat. You dont see pedophiles fighting for their rights or coming out?? no offense

Ok people dont personalize this.....it is a general question towards the GBLTs and the way the media and others makes such a BIG deal about being gay.........you can always tell which ones agree with the lifestyle and which ones dont.

Garik, arbitrary thing to disapprove of?? Hmm ok so you obviously agree with the lifestyle. I will say once again it is a CHOICE! Whether people want to believe it or not. Ok, so you may say, "I didnt choose to be this way.", well Im sure pedophiles didnt either or murderers BUT they do make conscious decisions to put action to it the thing that makes them who they are, THEY CHOOSE. Sometimes I have strong desires to sIap people but I choose not to, there have been times in my past that I had desire to sleep with but I CHOSE not to. I cant CHOOSE to be mexican, no matter what I do, so please stop comparing it to RACE or being left handed - its not the same.

I agree with you. The argument that gays present that the discrimination against them is the same as discrimation against blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities of color doesn't wash. Homosexuals have a choice on whether or not to make their sexual preference known to society. Those who face prejudice because of their skin color can't hide what they physically look like.

I think your argument's rather disingenuous.
First, even if you can change your sexuality (and I'm not entirely convinced that most people can do so), what difference does that make?
Let's turn this on its head: imagine if you could take a pill that would turn black people white: would that justify racism? Would it be OK to say "I have a black friend, but I don't support his lifestyle: he could change if he wanted to." Of course not.
Let's take another example: imagine if everyone was right-handed, and someone decided to be left-handed, would that make it wrong, or make prejudice against them justified?
People deserve the right to love whomever they choose, and the right to enter into loving relationships with other adults. And they deserve the right to do this without abuse.
I mean, how is loving someone of the same sex immoral? How can it be a lifestyle 'you don't agree with'? What's not to agree with?
It just seems such an arbitrary thing to disapprove of.

Yeah, you can probably fiddly with sexual preference in the brain by fetishizing and/or brain washing the person for long periods of time.
It would be like, if you are a straight woman, having sex with the plainest, most physically unattractive man over and over because you have convinced yourself that his nose is nice and it feels good when you masturbate yourself off against it...
...all at the same time you're living next door to one of the hottest hunks on the planet.
Similar effect, except the rationalizing to trick your mind into letting yourself function with a gender you don't find inherently attractive is probably a bit harder to pull off successfully for long.
As to the original question, I think gay people want to be recognized as human beings because, in many/most cultures and religions, they are taught from birth that there is something wrong with them or they do not or should not exist or that the only thing they should get out of life is suffering because they don't match what society expects of them.
They are threatened because they are a threat to society's belief in gender roles and the power division that comes from it.
So, a little recognition and validation, for whatever reason, goes a long way toward resolving an overwhelming mass of social **** they get shoveled.

I think it is sad that you think that a person born gay can just change that. No one would just choose to be gay! It is much harder to live your life to the fullest. In the 60's, no one would hire a gay person, if the company realized the person was gay. At that time, gays married straight people, in order to get a job, to have a family, and any 'gay activity' was kept way down, out of sight. As the years went along, many people decided to come out of the closet.........they didn't decide to be gay, they always were, but it was not acceptable. That may be what confuses you: people who have been married, had a family, then, got divorced and now, have a gay relationship. When it comes to comparing color to being gay, it is a correct corolation. Black people used to try to 'pass' as white, since people who were black could not get the same jobs as non/blacks. Non-blacks were treated one way, while blacks were treated an entirely different way. This still happens a lot..............is this black bashing? yes, it is. Gay bashing is anytime you make a joke where the gay person appears dumb or out of normal character as everyone else. It is when you hurt a person, any way, for being gay. It is when you avoid a person because he/she is gay. As long as you separate your acquaintences by gay or straight...........you ARE bashing. When the day comes, and I do believe it will, that people are people, period............then, we will have found a Utopia that I hope to live long enough to see..

thats a good question! i think really most people dont care one way or the other.i had suggested at work before it should not be an issue just what kind of worker you are.are you honest, hardworking, dependable?do you miss a lot of work?are you a drunk, drug addict or just trashy?if you are why should anyone excuse bad behavior just because you choose to be gay! i dont think you deserve special treatment.if you are a good worker great but you wont get a medal for it because you are gay, no one cares.you get paid to work your love life has nothing to do with it.i agree with everything you said and yes i have had gay friends and every family has them too.i dont agree with it but as you say its a choice and i repect that.and i think my right to not be gay should be respected also.bless you.

Really?? 'Gay people think that everyone else should fall down and recognize them for being gay'??
I'm wondering where you got this idea from.
And for the record, no one changes their 'sexual preference' like they don't change their skin color.
