Call the vet! They can normally get the object that is choking them out themselves.

Heimlich maneuver for dogs:
Follow these steps to perform the Heimlich maneuver on your choking dog.
1)The size of the dog will affect the exact positioning of your hands.
2)Place your arm around the dog's chest letting the head and shoulders hang over it.
3)Close your hand to form a fist and bring your other hand around and cover your fist with it. Your two handed fist should be placed between the dog's lower tummy and its rib cage.
4)Then quickly and firmly thrust your two handed fist inwards and upwards.
5)Repeat as often as is necessary to dislodge whatever is blocking your dog's airways.
6)If your once you have removed the object your dog is still not breathing then begin AR (artificial respiration) and if it has no pulse CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation).
7)Seek immediate medical attention.
Helping a choking cat...Method I
If the cat is one you know and you believe that an object, such as a bone, might be in its throat and obstructing the cat's breathing, reach in with your fingers or tweezers and try to remove it. if the blockage is further down, lay the cat on its side, place the heel of your hand just behind the last rib, angling slightly upward, and push firmly, but not so firmly as to break the ribs. Four quick thrusts should dislodge the obstruction; if not, try again. If unsuccessful, take the cat to a veterinarian.
Method II
Immediately look inside your cat's mouth for any obvious foreign body. DO NOT poke about in his mouth without looking, or you may push a foreign body back into his throat.
If there is a foreign body in the mouth, attempt to remove it (use the tweezers (dull point) or pencil (eraser end) in your first-aid kit if appropriate). However, if the object appears to be deep in your cat's throat, leave it alone or you may push it further down towards his airway.
If your cat is choking, quickly lift him up by his hindlegs so that his head is dangling down, and slap the side of his rib cage with two fingers of your free hand, in sharp, 'cough-like', jerky movements. You should only move your hands a little, in order to stimulate a sudden rush of air from his lungs: this should help to dislodge any foreign body stuck at the back of the throat. Be sensible about the amount of pressure that you apply, particularly with a kitten. Do not slap too hard or you may break the ribs.
As soon as your cat coughs out the foreign body, settle him on the ground and let him calm down in his own time.
Ensure that your cat cannot leave the house.
Continue to watch over your cat. Be careful not to stimulate him in any way, and try to discourage him from moving about.
Contact your vet to tell your vet what has happened. There is little point in doing so sooner (unless you have someone with you who can make a telephone call), as this will waste precious time: your cat's best chance of survival rests with you.

you can try Heimlich, or any other method on an animal...BUT LISTEN TO THIS.
DO NOT PERFORM ANY OF THESE MANEOUVRES ON A PERSON ESPECIALLY A CHILD, IF AIR IS GOING IN AND OUT. you might dislodge it and completely block the airway. Get emergency medical help.
This does not pertain to "something going down the wrong way" this is when they are really having trouble, but are still breathing air.

as a mom, my instinct is to wack it out of them (not too roughly) to try and dislodge whatever it is that is choking them. I have to do it to my dobie every now and then because he inhales his food so quickly that he chokes himself. Most of the time he is able to get it up himself though. There is Pet CPR. Maybe look into it. My dobie did chew up a rope chew toy, now he didn't choke on it but it got intwined in his insides and therefore he got very sick. A very very expensive surgery came soon after to remove the entangled rope!

I'm pretty sure you can preform the Heimlich on dogs. Just be careful not to crush it.

You do the Heimlich and if that doesn't work try to scoop whatever it is out with your finger.

I know in humans, if their chocking they cant speak, (a person who says their chocking but is able to say it is not seriously choking, although they may have something stuck there.) So if it cant bark or meow or anything and if looks like its trying to, then its chocking.
