No, it shouldn't hurt your computer (although I prefer gaim, which interfaces with AIM as well as several other instant messaging programs)
Of course there's a way they can tell you downloaded it; they can look at the computer and see the software on it. You'd be better off asking your parents for permission to install it. You can probably set it up to only allow messages from people you have on your friends list, so strangers can't contact you.

you shouldn't be hiding your screen name from your parents in the first place, just tell them, because they will find out sooner or later, whether through your friends or the add/remove page.
any software has the chance of damaging your computer, though aim is pretty safe, there is a chance of getting a virus, or someone might hack into your computer from aim....it has happened before (or it's only my friends that does this kind of thing). I have an Aim (6.0), and rarely go on, but sometimes annoying people im you trying to get your personal info. Ignore and you'll be safe. So: tell your parents and keep your info to yourself, and you'll be set (well not from a virus but Norton Antivirus might help with that)

First off, the main question is why are you hiding the fact you have an AIM name from your parents to begin with?
In my own experience, AIM has completely screwed up my computer so I don't use it.
Also, yes they will be able to tell because like any program on the computer, it appears in the Add or Remove Programs Menu on your computer under the Control Panel.

No, it won't harm your computer. But if your parents ever ask if you have a screen name, tell them. Don't lie and say you don't. But don't bring up the subject incase they get mad. If you guys have the same computer, they will probably figure it out! So, no, it won't harm your computer! Trust me, I have it and it doesn't do anything bad. They will be able to tell, because once you download it, it's stuck to the whole computer. It's not just on your account, if you have your own. Hope my advice helped you!

I don't think so. AIM never screwed my computer up. Just yahoo messenger. Just put the AIM icon in a secret file so that your parents don't know.

Yes, they will be able to tell if you downloaded it.
No, it will not harm the computer if you download it from www.aim.com or www.download.com
So, your parents can find out if they check, and no, it isn't harmful.
