I'm 14 years old and my mom is allergic to dogs and my brother is allergic to cats. Annoying situation, eh? Well, I've been looking at ferrets and they seem like good pets. I know they're high maintenance, require medical attention and everything. I am very responsible though, and I think I am ready for this pet.

My MOST important question is if my family members are allergic to rats, cats and dogs is there a chance they will also be allergic to ferrets??

How much work are they? Are they good pets? What's their average life-span? Is the basement a good place to put the cage? Do they bite a lot?

I know these are a lot of questions, but I REALLY need answers!!!

If they are allergic to all the animals you listed then they will more than likely be allergic to a ferret. They do make wonderful pets and are very easy to take care of. They sleep most of the time, but if you are ready to play so are they. Their scheduale becomes the same as yours, which you really can't find in any other pet. Their life span is about 6-8 years though they can live longer if well taken care of. The basement would be fine to keep them in, the only problem would be if it is too cold for them. Just make sure the temp is right. They don't bite they may playfully nip at you, but they won't hurt you.
I think with your family you may want to get a reptile or fish. Ferrets shed twice a year and your family members could have an allergic reaction to the hair which could be bad. If they are taking any allergy medicine for dog and cat hair then they wouldn't have a problem with ferrets.
If you did get a ferret all you would have to do is feed it, give it water, change the litter box, and play with it. Very easy to take care of and like I said they are wonderful pets!

It's an awful spot to be in and on the subject of keeping pets and I am afraid your mom is going to be averse to ferrets too. But I find it hard to believe that the humble dog and cat is not favoured. It could be furry creatures that your mom is allergic to......does she have sneezing bouts. A pet with no fur could be accepted. If you really want to keep a ferret the best place would be spare ground attached to the house.

If you are severely allergic to cats, then ferrets will probably irritate your allergies also. My mother, brothers and I are all allergic to cats, but we thought ferrets were fine, so we offered to ferret-sit for my friend. Immediately we all started sneezing and I broke out into a rash after i had held the ferret. But it depends on the person, ferret and severity of the allergy.

well i cant tell if your family will be allergic or not. but i do own to ferrets and I'm 16. ya there a lot of work a lot more then a dog, but i think there worth it. they got a slight Oder but if they have there scent gland things removed they stink that bad and mine both get a bath every week. i think they usually live like 8 years. Neither of mine bite hard, its like a kitten i guess. there just playing, they like to attack my feet when i walk lol. there very entertaining and my dog loves them. oh and i wouldnt recomend just owning one, well maybe to start off, but they get very lonley and easily bored.

I wouldnt think of a ferret could be a competent selection. I had 5 and the hair sheds and that they do get a sturdy scent. you may bathe them frequently...... and sparkling the clutter container a ton. no longer elementary pets to maintain. Your brother maximum probable could have a reaction to them besides.
