Brands don't matter, specifications are all that matters. And a desktop or laptop really depends on your preferences and needs. Do you need to be mobile and have a computer that you can carry around with you... then get a laptop. If mobility is not that important then save money and get a desktop.

Some popular computer brands are HP, Gateway, Dell, and Apple. I would recommend a PC instead of a MAC computer because they can download more things than a MAC can. I would recommend a laptop if you want to sit in bed and type or bring it to school or work. Desktops are good if you would like to sit at a desk and they are easier to update with parts. I have a Dell laptop and I love it.

For similar power laptops are more expensive than desktops. However I love laptops and can't live without one since I travel a lot. I also move mine around the house so I can use it on the couch or in bed if I want.
One thing is that if you get a laptop you should get an external ergonomic keyboard. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (also called Repetitive Motion Syndrome) will get you with a normal laptop keyboard since it is smaller.
Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Asus, and HP all make excellent laptops. Make sure you get one with a high enough resolution screen for what you intend to do with it.

Toshiba is a very good brand, with high quality computers. They make laptops, so go with Toshiba. I have a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092, and I love it. Most Toshiba laptops have Windows Vista. My laptop has Windows XP, and I think it can handle Windows Vista Premium; but I'm not going to upgrade anytime soon.

I generally go with Dell (my family has gotten a half-dozen computers from them in the last decade or so). Desktops cost less for the same amount of power, so unless you want to carry it with you, I prefer a desktop.
When I'm in the market for a new computer I generally check out the deals listed on Bargainshare; they tend to catch all the good Dell deals.

Stick with major brands. Warranty is assured. Prices very competitive. Watch for sales. Desktops have a longer life and stay cooler. Laptops have shorter life and batteries can overheat.

Well, it depends on your needs. If you want a gaming computer (HIGH SPEED RAM, VGA, MOTHER BOARD) and you want to take it place to place Lambogini Samsung Notebook is the best. And if you want it to be just for your home use check the needs you want and get a desktop.

probably a desktop.
They're bigger, pack heavier hardware than laptop's, and a heck of a lot cheaper as well.
They're also easier to upgrade as well.
