LOL! This is an expression coming from the days when dogs, most dogs worked for their living.
Terriers were used for fox and rat hunting.
Collies and Shepherds were used for herding sheep and other animals.
Retrievers and Hunters were used in aiding their masters in the daily/weekly hunt for food.
Larger dogs were used to pull heavy carts or sleds into town to sell produce, etc.
Working like a dog means working so hard for very little in return.

Probably an old saying from the days when dogs worked - like they still do out in the country. I have a working cocker spaniel who if he was employed would be a gun dog, retreaving birds etc. However, my little lad has never done a hard days work in his life!

True, but a working dog, really works. Whether he/she is herding sheep or cattle.
Retrieving for his master out hunting. Babysitting their favorite kids.
There are dogs on the Police Force, and some that search for drugs. Some are See and Eye dogs. Some are companions to the handicapped.
Dogs do a lot of different jobs, and they "Love" to please their masters/ trainers.

It's an old saying. Back a long time ago dogs actually did work! Not like today where dogs set manicures and wear designer "cloths"

Pet dogs lie around all day because their owners don't require them to do anything.
When a dog has been given the training to do a task then it will do that task until told to stop by its owner/handler or it collapses from exhaustion - hence the saying.

I have no clue, actually. My lazy dachshund does little more than sleep (in my bed, mind you), go outside, and eat. I lift him on and off the bed. Sometimes he sleeps there without me. He has 4 beds in the house, and 2 blankets, one in my chair, and one on the sofa. If the laundry is warm, he jumps in the basket and burrows underneath it to sleep. If I had a job where I worked like him, I'd be a very wealthy and happy woman.

dogs were bred and domesticated to help us humans do our jobs easier - hunting, farming, security, etc. The dogs do all the work, hence the saying "working like a dog"
