When you grasp how mind-boggingly big it is...I mean even our solar system. If you drew a few dots on a piece of paper, representing the sun and planets, the next star, on that scale, would be a few thousand miles away...doesn't this ever freak you out?

Great question !
I am an astronomer and after MAANY years of learning to become one ..and yeaars working as an astronomer .. looking thru some of the biggest telescopes and peering thru amazing things live you don't usualy see in everyday life....

my hair still stands up on the back of my neck and my goosebumps are now baseball sized goosebumps.

you mentioned dots ..

according to our observatory's massive database ..

there are an estimated 70 sextillion dots that are stars out there

The Hubble Space Telescope has found there may be 125 billion dots that are galaxies

now on one of those dots in space ..lets say the dot named Vega .. my favourite star..

to it we are so smaller than a dot we don't exhist to Vega!

Just when your feeling SMALL you realize you don't exhist!

I sat outside one night in my backyard
thinking how we are just a dot while looking at Vega ..
then i thought omg! we don't exhist to that star !!!

now how's that for mind-boggingly big !!

my goosebump became a watermelon that night ! Doh!

One time when I was in my early thirties, I had recently seen a Cosmos episode that talked about the large scale structure of the universe, and later I was outside lying on the grass looking up at the crescent moon, for just a moment I got a sense of the enormity of it all and yes, it completely freaked me out. I got such a sense of agoraphobia I almost had a panic attack. It reminded me of the total perspective vortex from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ( the book, not the movie) It would probably turn most people's brains to mush if they could really get a true sense of just how small and utterly insignificant our whole world really is in the grand scheme of things. Total perspective is not your friend.

Whenever life get you down, Mrs. Brown
And things seem hard or tough
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you've had quite enu-hu-hu-huuuuff

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

Dang, All I know is that the earth alone is huge to me. Then there is the solar system, then the hundreds of galexies, that makes up the universe doesn't it? I wonder if somebody will ever invent something to go so fast, they can see ho big space is.

WOW

Thats great!

And even think that we're just a little part of this universe!

Sometimes I think that the Universe is so huge!! And we have not even landed on Mars!! That weird!

Yes, it's incredible! I watched the Cosmos series on Science channel, and was just in awe of the enormity and complexity of it. And amazed at the work of our Creator.

Yes, and it's also amazing. If only we could travel and had the means to go so many other places.
