My friend, asking a privet to grow faster will require that you fertilize it, have a top-of-the-line set of power tools for shaping, and a state-of-the-art Chiropractor nearby. The more you force them the more they will respond. The more they respond the more you have to shape them. The more you shape them the more sore your back is going to become!
Privet is a quick growing, and generally, a hearty plant. Since you only have four plants you will want to have them grow horizontally vs. vertical, for the time being. Fertilize them with a 10-10-10 plus mineral granular fert in the spring and fall. Hand prune the vertical growth but let the horizontal alone! This will fill in the hedge row.
You will be surprised at the speed the plant grows. In the third year you will fert only in the late fall. Once again, hand prune only the wayward vertical growth (for appearance sake). By the third year you will be pruning at a level of waist to chest high!
As a precaution, use a compound such as round-up or preen around the plant base, in the first two years. Some nasty weeds such as morning glory, poison oak, sumac, etc can infiltrate the plants. To lessen any potential harm to the plant cut back all growth from the ground to at least four inches height from the bed level. After the second year I would use Dyclomec 5G or the Preen.
Privacy is one thing, your back another. Do not allow the plantings to grow where you need a ten foot ladder to prune or shape the Privet. Keep the height managable for you with little exertion on yourself. The more you cut it the better it likes it. Good Luck

It's privet, and you will be surprised at how fast it grows without your help. It also marches forwards, so make sure you keep mowing if you don't want it to get wider. Just keep cutting away any maples or anything else that sprouts up in it, and you'll have a lush privet in just a couple of years. I have red cardinals living in mine all winter, and in summer, the smell drifts all through my house.

growing them on for a year in a big pot with good soil in works, but that means another year without a hedge. Improving the soil in the area you plant it in also works. then just add a good multipurpos fertalise at regular intivals. as soon as the plant takes properly and gets its roots established, it should romp away (when the weather gets a bit warmer)

Give your hedge a liquid feed early spring and again mid summer any general plant fertiliser. Mulch with rotted manure late winter early next spring.
