NOT a good question for homework!! I mean, WHY does any author use the themes he/she uses? Obviously because the themes interest him/her in exploring the human condition. Steinbeck was no different. A better question would be, "HOW does Steinbeck use the themes of relationships and loneliness?" Former English teacher of 40 years.

He was a lonely man and had a difficult time with relationships. During some of his lighter material entitled "Travels with Charlie," he lived for a short time in Rivera, Texas off of the Gulf Coast near Corpus Christi with a woman who locally was known as his "wife" although there is no mention of her in his biographies. I remember reading her response to the Corpus Christi School District censoring "Of Mice and Men" in the Corpus Christi Caller Times. She was still living in Rivera and was disappointed that her husband, a man who gave so many wonderful literary genie to the world, would be censored because of some language that was commonly used but considered ill mannered. Ironic, since our classrooms are filled with these foul words today in the on a daily basis. Life in his lifetime was hard. He wrote an honest view of those hard times that people could relate to. I'm glad his last days were happier times; although, an artist's soul is never 100% happy.

because they're themes that resonate - everybody can empathise with them
the theme of literature is usually a universal one - it's an exploration of the human condition
yes the setting has an impact on that, but it's a reflection of the theme rather than a cause for it
