Don't get a glass tank, please. It's not well ventilated at all. The best type of cage you can get is something thats a combination wire/plastic cage. (usually the bottom is plastic, sometimes the top is plastic too, and the middle is wire. This type of cage will contain most of the hamster mess, is well ventilated, and will let your hamster climb around. As far as toys go, a hamster wheel is a must, but keep in mind, hamsters are nocturnal (stay up all night, sleep all day) and while you're trying to sleep, he or she will be running on the wheel, and the noise might keep you awake. They sell "silent" wheels. If you're a light sleeper, you might want to look into one of those. Alot of hamster cages make it so you can add on tubes, little huts, etc. Those are great because hamsters love to burrow and climb through tubes. They're kind of annoying to clean but your hamster will appreciate it.
Also make sure you get something for your hamster to sleep in. (pet stores sell a ton of stuff for hamsters to sleep in)
If this is your first hamster, dont get a dwarf. Theyre feisty and quick, and usually not overly friendly. For your first hamster I'd go for a teddy bear hamster. They're a bit bigger than most hamsters, and usually more friendly. Have the people at the petstore take out the one you want, and hold it for a while to see if it's a biter.
Biters can be trained not to bite, but it'll take a while and if youre a kid and this is your first , you probably dont wanna deal with that.

When i had hamsters when i was young we had to put them in a glass cage because the little stinker would chew threw plastic and with the wire cage she would kick out her bedding all over. With the glass cage she couldn't get hurt by chewing the plastic and would stay comfortable because her bedding was still in there. Inside the cage I had a hamster wheel, food dish, water bottle and her bedding. I then added an activity tube set to the top of it and she loved it. The best thing to do is go to a pet shop and see which one you like the best and what will fit in the area that you want it to be. Then ask the pet store if they have had any complaints about any of the cages and what ones they recommend for 1st time owners.
Good luck! :)

Okay i got a wire/plastic one for my little hamster....let me tell u what..ICKY! God its the hardest thing to clean the world. AND My hamster almost broke his leg because where the tube connected to the top part there was a gap that he got his foot stuck in. It was horrible. And takes me an hour to clean.
To make a glass cage fun u can still get colorful tubes. They love them and a nice PLASTIC wheel. (dont get wire they can get their foot stuck and they squeak like CRAZY)
Your a beginner? If you need to know anything else about hamsters there is a whole crap load of stuff i know about them like what exacly to get a such. If you need it just email me and i'll edit this to give u all the info. (i would do it right now but if u didnt need it then well that would be a waste Lol)
ur a kid ? i guess u can call me a kid too....im in my first year of highschool...

Oh my gosh. Let me tell you from experience, don't get one that looks cool. You know, the colored ones with all the cute little pipes and things all over the place. It takes FOREVER to clean. I'd go for a wire cage that sets in a plastic base or something like that. That way, when it's time to clean it you just lift the wire out and dump the tray and you don't have all the hassel.

I think you would be happiest with a glass aquarium. It's easy to clean and the hamster can't get his feet caught in the sides. Also, I had a hamster once that would chew on the metal and plastic. I took him out of the metal cage because of the chewing, put him in a plastic one and he chewed a hole in that large enough for him to get out. Get one of those balls that you can put the hamster in while you clean the cage.
Good Luck and have fun with the hamster

A glass tank is best. Wire and mesh cages can catch a foot and cause injuries. Plastic harbors all sorts of bad bacteria. Glass is your best bet. A screen top will allow for good ventilation. Be sure not to use cedar or pine bedding as those woods release toxins.

you can do a lot to make a glass tank fun for a hamster .. it is simple .. you can use a paper towl roll or toilet paper roll they love to run through them and cheew on them as well you can get them a wheel to run on ... all so you can make your own lil maze with just a shoe box or smaller box depending on the size of your tank .. cut holes in it cut a long pice like a slide dont use tape glue or staples that can hurt them all you need to so is make slits and slide and end in and bend it over and put holes on the slid so it can climb on it they will chew it up and it wont hurt them none but then next time you can be more creative and make a another one when that one is all chewed up .... my kids do it with theres all the time and Taz Loves it ...

I'm not sure...but don't get the plastic. Get the metal one probably....that's easiest to clean. By the way , if you want a hamster, spell it right! It's hamster not hampster. Just saying. *Lol*
Good luck taking care of your new hamster!

Hampsters can live comfortably either in wire cages or glass aquariums. Most hampsters accommodate themselves pretty readily to whatever housing they are offered. Does your hampster have a name? I'll bet it's Hampy.
