How about a balloon-like structure? All stars, planets, cosmic dust, dark matter- everything in our universe, lies on the surface of this balloon. The balloon's getting bigger all the time (the expanding universe). Every point on the ballon is getting further away from every other point. There is NOTHING inside the balloon shape- and NOTHING outside it, either. The only way you can travel in this universe is along the balloon's surface. An observer who lies outside the balloon (impossible, but this is a thought experiment), can see that all journeys made in the universe have got to be along curved paths, inside the balloon's skin. My mind is now hurting, but I hope this helps.

Obviously, it's impossible to draw something that's infititely huge so what I would probably do would be to start off with an ecliptical oval and start from there. Obviously, you need to have a frame of reference from with to start at so start with the Milky Way (the solar system would be too small an object in a map of the Universe) and then with the Andromeda Galaxy being our closest neighbour, that would be next and then, using the latest images from Nasa et. al. I would go from there.

I'd draw a trifle with lots of layers, down the bottom would be all the cold boring planets like Pluto and Uranus, then the creamy multi-coloured filling would be Saturn and its moons, then a nice wodge of cake on top to be all the other planets, Earth is sitting in a slab of blue jelly somewhere on the top, cover the lot with custard (the Sun, of course) and then the fun bit. Lots of hundreds and thousands and glittery silver balls on top being the stars and twinkly bits, oooh and some chocolate swirls (dunno what they are but they taste nice), and a few candles (comets, of course).
OK, my astronomy might be way out but isn't your mouth watering now just as the thought of it all. Pass me a slice of universe trifle, please, and don't stint on the double cream ..

If you were to draw the universe, what would be on the outside of your drawing??
The truth is no-one knows and we never will..even though we think we are more intelligent than anything else we are really very ignorant .

well there is a university that has made a virtual 3d model of the known universe. but i think that if you drew it then there are so many stars, galaxys, planets ect that it would just be white because looking at it side on there would be so much light that it would all be completly white and every bit of 2D space would be taken up by a dot of light so a completly white page is what i think.

The Universe is what ever u make it to be. There is no right or wrong answer and there is no possible way to prove it. It's an infinate and vast spance of imagination and knowledge to what ever you want it be.

I once saw a "picture" of the universe on usatoday.com. It looked like a cup on its side, like an ellipsoid that was cut in half.

i would take a hot pink, mustard yellow, lime green, aqua blue, vivid purple crayon and scribble all over my sheet of paper. then i would take a tar black && blood red, scribble all over one half of it. then, a brown in one small blob in a corner.
the good, the bad, and the ugly
