u should get a betta fish, they dont need filters or nothing like that. just put one in a bowl and remember to use spring water.

The best starter pet would be a fish such as a gold fish or a beta. These are easiest to care for and get you used to being responsible.
If you want one that you can hold though the best bet would be a hamster or a guinea pig. For these the best thing to do is go to your local humane society and look at what they have available. This will also help you see what you are most comfortable with and what your mom is OK with. These cost a little to start up but are very cheap once you have everything.
For a hamster the best cage is a glass aquarium, no chance of their feet getting caught in wires or them chewing on something they arent supposed to. You will want to get some bedding wood bedding is best it soaks up the smell of the urine (not cedar or pine though, these release toxins), a small food dish, and a water bottle. You may also want to look into an activity land to place on top of the cage. You dont need this right away though, some are pricey. You may also want to look into getting some teething sticks.
For a Guinea pig the best cage is a wire cage with a plastic bottom so their feet dont get hurt. You want to make sure that it is big enough that they will have an area to go potty as well as sleep. They need to be able to run around a little as well. You will need bedding, same as above, food dish and a water bottle. You can purchase a "playpen" for it when you have play time with it outside of its cage. Just lay newspaper down and place the cage around it and buy some balls for it to play with.
I hope that this gives you some ideas. Good luck :)

a rat is what you want. The are smart and can travel around with you and can even be trained to walk on a leash. They smell the least of all rodents. as long your cleaning theyr cage out every 4 days to a week there shouldn't be any smell. and there so smart and cute :) I have two.
there social so they'lll actually want to hang out with you unlike hamsters.
another idea is a guinea pig. they also can be trained to a leash and will be come very attached to their owners. just make sure if you live in a cold place, that you bundle them up in a warm fuzzy when traveling.

well... i don't know about getting one that is cheap

unless you want to go with a hamster or something; you could get a little carrier and carry him with you

i wouldn't suggest a rabbit though because they are so routined, taking them places might cause them to freak out. but they walk on leashes, however are expensive with vet visits and such

ferrets are expensive but will walk on a leash, and shouldn't freak out in public (you may want to ask a ferret owner about that though)

a parakeet is a neat idea. you could have its wings clipped and have it rest on your shoulder. can be expensive to care for (cage, food, toys, etc.) but inexpensive to purchase (they run like $20)

I hope this helps you get a few ideas, just remember it you clean the cage regularly the animal nor room will stink. Please do your research though, you don't want to pick the wrong kind of animal. Best of luck. Happy St. Patrick's Days!

P.S. I suggest adoption http://search.petfinder.com

A rat. They travel better than most rodents and they don't smell if you clean their tank as often as you should.

get yourself a charming little common chameleon----they are very inexpensive---harmless--easy to care for-----and some people years ago used to make a harness with a leash and wore them on their shoulder----they as are cute as can be.

You can get a parakeet as long as you keep the cage clean they smell normal. They will cost about $15-$20. Idk about taking it places though.
