Get a really big one with two stories so they arn't stuff in there.

And let them out on the grass to play once in a while. Like once a week or more.

Habitrail, aren't the best but it's better then a bin. It's best to get a metal rod cage , the kind that have one or two doors on them. I have two gerbils and when they were babies then had a simple 2 floor cage from Living World ( company, not store) Then my dad just bough a VERY large cage about 2 years after So they could have more room to run and because they were bigger. I suggest either buying a new cage, or using the Habitrail one for now then later buying a new cage. Also make sure if the cage is small that they get out to run around ( they love to RUN!)

Here are the gerbil setups I'd recommend:

The cheapest place to get a 10 gallon tank is Walmart at 9-10$, but even at PetCo/Smart they are only 12-13$ You can also get aspen, corncob, or processed paper bedding at the larger Walmart superstores. (no pine or cedar for gerbils)

The rest of the supplies order on line at www.thatpetplace.com (the tank covers are in the reptile sections, everything else you need is in the small animal section -- their supplies are so cheap - even with shipping you will save a lot of money).

Gerbils are amazing gnawers and tunnelers -- they will chew their way out of anything plastic and wire cages are messy because they will gnaw up cardboard and build tunnels. Glass tanks are best.

A 10 gallon is fine for 2 gerbils and very quick to clean (put a drop of bleach an 2 inches of hot hot water in the tub. And flip the tank around all all five sides. Then rinse). Gerbil like the extra space of a 20 gallon (get a 20 gallon long), but the tank and topper are about 3 times more expensive and heavier to lift and clean.

I used old fish-tanks. You can get SLIGHTLY cracked ones from pet-shops, too cracked to allow it to be filled with water, but not cracked enough to pour saw-dust and peat out. Gerbils like to dig, CONSTANTLY, so filling the tank almost full means that they can dig plenty - a lot like their natural habitat.
For the lid, you'll probably have to make that yourself. Again, we put 4 planks of wood together - a picture frame will do, and on top, stapled/glued/selotaped chicken wire on top. Be careful the wires or sharp ends aren't in the tank - if that makes sense :S Plus, a good idea is buy a mesh/guaze that has quite wide squares, so you can just drop food through for the gerbils :)
I can give you plenty of ideas, email me Luchia28@msn.com if you need any further help or ideas :)
Oh, btw, to wash, you simply tip out all the sawdust/food/peat/fluff (with the gerbils outside of course) then stick it in the shower, give it a quick rinse, dry it with a towel, fill back up :) Simple. However, it is quite heavy :S

A glass tank, 30 gallons long with a screen top. Wire cages with bars can cause foot injuries, plastic cages harbor bacteria, glass is best. The screen top will allow plenty of ventilation. Be sure not to use cedar or pine bedding because both woods release toxins.

One they cant escape from! In all seriousness, get a metal cage as they will always find a way to chew through plastic ones.
