The vast majority of Chinese are atheists because they grew up in a regime that tried to stamp out religion and replace it with the state. That's typical for communism. Confucious was not an atheist. He was a philosopher.

confucius... uh, i dont think he was an athiest... i think he was the one that mentioned that individuals have four loyalties: god, country(king),family, and friends
