Most internet providers provide a free internet protection package.
------------------------------------------------
Free Active (full time) Virus Protection (AVG is best)
AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition

Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Active Virus Shield (AOL Anti Virus Shield)

Avira Antivirus Personal Edition Classic

BitDefender 8 Free Edition

1 year FREE trial of CA Anti-Virus

------------------------------------------------------
You also need active (full time) spyware protection
Windows Defender (free)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
------------------------------------------------
I strongly recommend you install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. Install all 5. They are not a substitute for active virus and spyware protection.
Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Do not enable Tea Timer and SDHelper After installation: update + scan + immunize

SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”.

SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)

CCleaner:
Install options. Do not install toolbar or recycle bin options
In options:
Place cookies you want to keep in the save list.
Set to run when computer starts.

You download it.
You have two major application to choice from;
AVG v.7.5 Free
Voted best free ware for the years:
2004
2005
2006
Download it here:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Avast home edition v.4
Free
Won some major awards
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Both are as powerful as each other.
Avast is slightly quicker than avg however avg is much easier to use and doesn't slow the system down as much.
Personally I use AVG.
Hope this helps.
