Wow, you surprised me with an unusually intelligent question. There is still no "greatest" because everyone contributes something different, but at least you gave some criteria for a discussion. Awesome.
The Beatles are unbeatable - they started 90% of today's trends, followed only by the Stones. But 30 years from now? I don't think music will have the role it had in the 70s or even now. The audience is segmentedd, granularized around little groups and hihly defined styles - there has not been the one huge band/star like The Beatles or The Stones used to be in decades, nor can there be one anymore. Something digital, multi-sensory, multi-media will replace plain old rock bands as we know them. That is, unless idiots like Osama, Bush and other terrorists don't destroy the planet & we have to start all over again, if we survive.
