My husband and I live outside Fredericton, NB and just bought a new house that has a large yard and we'd like to fence it in. I was trying to weigh the pro's and cons of wood vs hedges etc. We've got a lot of area to fence in, and don't want to spend a ton of money. Thanks for any help :)

It will be costly no matter which way you go. A fence is instant and a hedge would take in the very least about 2 to 3 years to give you any privacy. So the cost could be cheaper if you built a fence as a reasonable tree size could cost the same or more than a fence, as you have to buy many. If you wanted a very fast growing hedge tree that didn't cause allergies (Privet has a tendency to cause allergies ) would be a Lilli Pilli. This is not only a fast grower but has a small red fruit that is edible.
Just want to add..........a tree will grow quickly if it is fertilized and watered regularly, so it's important to do all the right things while the tree is growing. Now you decide...the work in a fence is a one off and you know the fence wont die OR the trees with the ongoing nurturing and care and beauty. It all depends if you like gardening or not and how much time you have to spend on the plants.

you may find that after you fence it in you end up buying shrubs and trees to soften the look of the fence. If you go with shrubs you can get some that are blooming at all times of the year and you can cut the branches early and bring them in and they bloom in the house, however some shrubs need to be pruned, so if your not into that this may not be for you. Board fencing has to have a very firm foundation, if your posts are not put in properly the fence won't hold up. It is expensive but worth it to hire that done professionally. Do fence styles change, and are the bylaws where you live strict on the height etc. of fences. Decisions , decisions, good luck oh by the by you could do both, like wooden down the sides and the back trees and shrubs or whatever would be good for your situation. Library books have some great ideas.

I just found a site with thousands of downloadable woodworking plans, it s really great. You can check it out here ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) Here is an honest review : If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where TedsWoodworking comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there're step-by-step explainations of how the plan should be done and put together. There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed. If you're one of those people who have bought plans like this in the past, TedsWoodworking will change your perception. In Ted's Woodworking you will get everything you need: Diagrams which are detailed with a full set of dimensions, step-by-step instructions how to start your project and the necessary materials for that particular project. All the woodworking tools you will need: If you are a beginner or have done some woodworking you will find these plans easy-to-follow as the instructions are very clearly written. The woodworking plans are straightforward so they are not complicated at all. Even if you are a total newcomer to woodworking you will simply be able to master all the techniques that are needed and the woodworking skills very quickly by following the concise and clear instructions. Another thing which is so great about these woodworking plans is that there have been some videos included and there are some to guide you in how to build benches home furniture dog houses bird feeders sheds and much much more. There is also a lifetime member acess included in the package and you get these extras for no cost to you as they are free with no additional charges at all! This alone is worth the entire price for TedsWoodworking. Ted Mcgrath is a very dedicated and experienced woodworker who knows what he is talking about when it comes to woodworking and DIY projects s he has been a woodworker for many many years. There is only one drawback that we could find and that being with 16,000 woodworking plans you are bound to get some which look a little disorganized but that is understandable as it is very difficult to place all these plans into their proper categories. Secondly, it might take you a little longer to do the downloads on because of the size of them. But the members area include an option to upgrade to the DVD so you can save time on downloading. I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars. Here's the bottom line: If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you SHOULD use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Check the site: ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info )

To save money you going to have to do a combo of wood fencing and hedges for the front part I would use hedges for decoration sake and to distinguish your property line and in the back yard I would use wood fencing for privacy and cost wood is less expenses then vinyl. I hope this helps..Have a good day or night depending on when you read this.

The cost of a hedge would be greater, however remember that a wood fence only lasts about 10 years before it needs replacing. Figure that in your calculations and the hedge might make more sense.

My folks bought a house with these HUGE hedges that separated the neighboring houses. Get those!

They were drop dead gorgeous all year round. Obviously you will have to buy them small and they should not be expensive. You will just have to be patient.

This kind were actually tree like. long and pointy. They each were placed when they were small the perfect distance apart so full grown they would form a solid wall. They did not need to be trimmed. We let them just grow and grow.

They were as high as the house. Better looking than any fence,

Privet is a cheap (I bought mine on ebay) hedge. The 'starts' look like long pencils, but the growth here in Kentucky is fast. It needs trimming 3 times a year if you want it to be shaped.. Sounds as though the hedge that other answerer had was like aprivet that did not get trimmed. I bet it was 5 feet wide on the groundlevel. And very effective.

My privet has grown in 3 years to be 5 feet tall, and has been doing well.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
