sorry but i'm a newbie hammy owner...how do i tell the difference between hamsters diarreah or her pee--she went to her "playground" loft area squated and while i watched she "went" but it wasn't dark enough for Poo but it wasn't watery or clear like pee--somewhat cloudy and thicky...the worst part was see managed to have moved food there before and then she started eating around there...my girly is a gross i tell you-but yeah i noticed that there are "droppings" around the cage of "hard poops" so in all how can you tell what the diarreah looks like....and also what kind of litter can i put around this area so it doesn't smell so strong and bad--thanks for any responses....

Actually, guinea pig and hamsters have cloudy like pee, it's gross i know! But i have owned them for over 5 years and thats just how it is! Just make sure your hammie has fresh water at all times, and a few fresh veggies as a treat! ( Not too much or then you will see some diahhreah!)

As for the smell: You can actually put plain kitty litter down and it clumps the pee and really works for deodorizing! Just make sure you don't get the kind of cat litter with those blue crystals in it, if you hamster decides to eat one it could make her sick! But as long as you get plain she will be fine, that's what i have been using for all my small animals!

If the liquid is brown and giving off a pungent odor ( you will know it's diahhreah when you see it, dont worry) i would suggest taking her to the vet over any thing else, but if you honestly can't give her some DriTail, which can be found at a Petsmart or most pet store-- however it isn't always 100% garaunteed and diahhreah can easily kill hamsters!

Sounds like diarreah, cut back on any watery veggies like lettuce and cucumber, etc. Stick with only hampster food or hard veggies like carrots.

The only thing at the bottom of the cage you need is cedar chips or that recycled material.
