You might get a 'show' - when the cervix starts to ripen, it dislodges the plug of mucous which kept the womb sealed during the pregnancy. That can happen up to a day or two before labour actually starts.
You might find your waters go - either in a bit of a gush or a steady slow stream. It's not strictly speaking a sign of labour, as it can happen at any stage during pregnany, but it's ALWAYS a sign that you need to get to hospital quickly to get your baby checked - the cord can prolapse and cause your baby problems, or you can quickly develop a womb infection, as your baby is no longer protected from the outside world.
The third and most usual sign of labour is the onset of contractions. These can be very mild at first, but if they're true labour contractions, they will eventually start coming regularly, and the gaps between them will get a little shorter over a little time. Some say contractions are like mild period pains, other feel them as a deep 'itch' in the lower back, others simply feel tightening over the lower bump.
Women can often feel a little 'off' or sickish the day they go into labour, so be on the watch for that.
The final and only true sign of labour is dilation of the cervix - but that can only be felt on internal examination.
Good luck!

You'll know - everyone is slightly different and some people twinge for days before going into labour, some have no indication, some have both differing from pregnancy to pregnancy. Its not instant in some cases. It took me a while to twig with my first but my waters broke with my second and i got induced with my third. Your body will tell you when its time to go to hospital too. I think the anticipation of being in labour and what it may bring can sometimes be worse than the real thing.
I wouldn't say I enjoyed it but its easily forgotten. Good luck x

it will be a bit confusing you will get alot of strong pain when you are due to have your baby, sometimes this is braxton hicks which is really your body practicing for the real thing and usually why women have false alarms. but if you feel you have to go to hospital ,if you cant stick the pain then go!! they might send you home and tell you that it is braxton hicks and then again they will examine you and tell you that you are indeed in labour. do you see why i said that it is confusing, if your waters break then you are definatly in labour

Belive me when i say you will know the difference between the practise and the real thing. The minute you go into labour you will know that its for real.

For everyone it's different - some people have back pain - What I had on all three kids was something that felt like cramps from your period and i lost my mucus plug and thats just about as gross as it sounds. but you'll for sure know when the pain gets more intense and less time inbetween each pain
GOOD LUCK!

You'll know, although your waters might not break first. You'll know whenyour having contractions. Don't be afraid to go to the hospital for advice, even if they send you home, their advice is more settling then worrying about you baby.

Your contractions will be spaced regularly, over a minute long each and you will be thinking "Um, you know what...nevermind! I don't want to do this anymore. Can't I stop this and try again tomorrow?"
