The reason we change our oil so much is that places like JiffyLube has convinced us that we need to. I use synthetic oil and don't even look at it for 10,000 miles. I change it when it gets dirty. Regular oil will lose its viscosity over time. You can check that by pulling the dipstick out, wiping the oil (make sure it's cool) on your finger. Lightly press your fingers together and then apart slowly. The oil should hang in there for about 1/4" before it separates.

What kind of oil? What kind of car? How many miles on it?
Is the oil synthetic or regular? Does the car have low miles on it or high?
When a car has higher mileage it is more likely to burn/use or leak oil. Also regular oil breaks down. Its additives dissipate from heat and the oil can become acidic and attract water and contaminants! 10,000 miles is way to long for any oil change interval! Dramatic engine wear and damage is more likely to occur with such a long oil change interval.

Imagine if you will, for a moment, NOT changing your socks for about a year. Not to mention wearing the same pair of shoes for a year also. How much junk will you have INSIDE of the socks and shoes BEFORE you change them? Think of that as the inside of your vehicle's engine! Please change your oil and oil filter every three thousand miles. Your engine will love you much more for it! As to the performance, what perormance? You'll have a melted pile of aluminum and steel laying on the ground when the engine finally blows up!

Yes. When the engine quits running you'll notice a distinct lack of acceleration.

it will just start gumming up the inside of your engine and eventually you won't have to worry about acceleration as you will be hitchiking along the road with your engine smoking in the back ground.
