Half of the people on here haven't bothered to answer the question instead just giving their own view on Walmart.
The answer is: Volume.
You sell a lot, you get higher returns.
You don't sell much, you don't get many returns.
It's really simple.

Yes, Wal-Mart is fairly low priced, but that same money saving low price has a nasty side effect. When everything is priced so low, people have trouble resisting tempation and convince themself, "it's ok... it's only..." When they get to the register, they see they spent more than they intended, but by then it's too late. There's a certain shame people feel when they have to sort though their purchases and say, "take this off... and this... and this please..." so the just go with it. They take the things home and sort it out there, then return to the store later with some excuse they thought of on the way back for why they're returning it such as "it doesn't fit" or "the spouse picked it up too." Then of course there's the people who simply overspent themselves because they thought they had already paid a bill and others who return an item not because they don't want it, but because something else came up that needed the money more urgently.
I guess all in all it comes down to the simple concept of a need for the general populace to improve their money management skills.

Main reasons for returns
- Damaged
- Wrong size
- Recieved as a gift, don't like it, doesn't fit, broke
The most I ever saw in a return line at my local walmart was about 5. Of course, after xmas the line is out the door. lol
Prices are okay.
Some of the clothing is nice and well made. They need to expand their shoe line and automotive department.
The grocery side. I don’t like it. The aisles are not wide enough, the lighting is to bright, for me anyways. I have vision problems in bright light. The shelving gives me a feeling of shopping a warehouse back room, or some cheapo inter-city store.
If they proved better lighting like a wegmans , widen the aisles, and lower shelves I might even do my grocery shopping there. But as it stands. I just get a creepy and uneasy feeling when grocery shopping there. I think mainly because of the visual enviorment.

I think alot of people overspend and have to return things to get the cash back to pay a bill or eat unless it's my nephew's wife she will take it back in about2 to3 weeks later she is one of those people who like to complain about EVERYTHING and I think she gets some kind of power tripp as well by telling the poor girl at the return desk what the problem is she has with whatever thing she is returning you know some people are never satisfied with S--- and enjoy trying to bring others down .I swear to you she takes back soooo much stuff back I'm surprised they even let her return anything.Target won't let you do that but 2 times a year and that's it.But the old saying that there is no pleasing some people.Good question though! Who really knows the correct answer.

I love Walmart. But when I shop there I often return stuff not because it was broken or what not. I sometimes buy clothes that I don't have time to try on with kids, so I exchange them. I once bought a tent at Walmart for my bf at the time, we camped in it (our first time camping) it down poured. Anyone that knows anything about camping knows that you can't touch the inside of a tent when it is raining or it will leak... We knew nothing about camping... SO after 3 hours of down pouring rain, and everything we own in the tent being soaked, we took down the tent, in the rain, tossed it in a trash bag, and returned it to Walmart on our way home. The woman didn't ask anything I told her I bought this tent 2 days ago, and it leaked... I was by then standing in a puddle of the rain dripping off of my body. She said nothing (probably afraid if she said anything I would blow up) I got my $180 back and we went home to dry off. We bought a new tent after we learned a little more about camping. lol.

They're not all returns sometimes exchanges for size or color. Also there could be a defect from where it was built or packaged. I like walmart prices compared to many others. I do most of my non food shopping there. Not that it's bad for groceries just that Aldi and Giant are closer to me for food shopping.

i think it's just because they don't have adequate assistance in that department. lines shouldn't be that long, they need more lines and employees.
