Well, they kept arguing about it. The people of the US wanted the 54'40" parallel line and were willing to fight for it, but the President thought this was a bad idea. He offered the 49th parallel to Britain, but they turned it down because they wanted more. A while later, they came back and said they'd accept, and our Northwestern border was set! The Oregon Treaty of 1846.
