I think the best time to shut up in any situation is when you are being insulted, or someone is making a comment to you and you are about two fingers balled to fist and want to react. My mother always taught me that if you count to 10 before you speak - you give your brain a chance to settle before you hit boiling point. I have since learned as a teacher that when I am dealing with a student who is going off or me, or going off period - it's not the student - it's the spirit inside the student and I have to address that issue. I let them talk. When they finish - I ask them to come with me and we talk privately - or if I need to deliver a message to this student and some of his or her friends who need to get the message - I will be honest and let them know that I 1) appreciate their comments 2) I might not agree with them, but I respected their right to engage in the conversation 3) I will tell them my point of view and provide facts or informational references when I can 4) I remind them that I am still the adult and must remain in charge in order to create an environment that we can all propser in and if they do not want to be in this cohesive, calm and respectly environment, I know of many who will accept them and their rancous behavior. You know, I had an incident once when two students were in a fight. I took them to the principal and we began to discuss the best way to deal with the issue. We discussed where these parents were employed (one at phone company, one at local nursing home). I suggested that we take students to each parent's employment and allow them to continue their fight in front of their parents and all their staff members. The students looked at us as if we were crazy and said - 'We can't go up there fighting at "My" momma's job", I responded - "Why not, you and your little friend are fighting at mine!" Needless to say - I don't have fights in my class. In essence, the best time to shut up is always when you are being pushed to step out of your center - when you do -you loose control - you have just given it up to someone else.

The best time to shut up is when you're ahead of the game. Like it is best to shut up before you put your foot in your mouth.

You know, I try so hard....and keep trying ....to shut up but it"s like something won't let me....something evil. There's always stuff on the tip of my tongue that forces me to open my mouth and say things I know are better left unsaid. I've tried chewing gum but I end up chewing with my mouth open and before I know it, I've said something else....I tell you it's...evil , working through my mouth. Now they want to make a movie of my plight.
