My boyfriend and I had a slight argument about whether or not you wear green on St. Patrick's Day. I said that if you DON'T, then you'll get pinched and he said that if you DO, you will get pinched. So which one is it? And if you have the source to your answer, that will also help out tremendously!

To all that answered, no I don't want to be pinched, lol, but I do like the Irish and their culture so I guess I also want to see how they really celebrate it too.

Okay, to the person that said my boyfriend has been living in a cave far too long, that really was unnecessary. So think before you speak cause I find that a little offensive.

Yes. you are supposed to wear green on St. Patty's day. Tell your boyfriend he's been living in a cave far too long. Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Yes, I have always been told to wear green on St. Patrick's Day. I always knew to remember it, too, due to the pinching that always occured if I forgot.

On St. Patties day, you wear green.
If you don't you either get pinched or have a bottle of
beer poured over your head.

It doesn't really matter all you are doing is recognizing another person or persons culture, race, or religion, but a good gesture would be to wear red, I mean green in fun.
