there are a lot of things could make your computer runs very slow. I'll show you what do to with each.
1) Spyware. This is the number one problem. Whenver you're on the internet, spywares are always trying to get into your computer. So, head to http://filehippo.com and download a few free anti-spywares from it. My favorites are: Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defenders. After you downloaded and installed them, ALWAYS update it first and then scan. Later in the future, if you want to scan your computer for spyware, again, UPDATE first then scan.
2) Virus!! Virus is another problem. Again, head to filehippo.com and download just one, you don't need more than 1, or your computer will be screwed, do to more than 1 antivirus software installed. Any one of them are fine, but the most popular are AVG, and Avast. Most of these are free to use, others have 30 days free-trial.
3) Not Enough Memory! For an XP computer, it's best to have at least 1gb - 2gb of RAM (memory), more than that is just a waste, unless you use your computer to editing music, video, graphic, etc...that required more memory. To find out how much memory do you currently have, right click My Computer, select Properties. A new windows will tell you how much you have. To find out what type of RAM do you use, go to http://crucial.com, click on Scan My Computer, in a minute, it'll tell you all about the RAM you use. If you want to add more RAM, then look for something said "DDR PC2700, or DDR2 PC5300, etc....", this is what you need to know to tell the seller what you need. And never install more than what your computer allows you to. Most laptops will have 2 gig max, some are more, some are less. Look around at the result.
3) Too Many Unwanted Trash! After many months and years surfing the net, installed, uninstalled programs, many files are laying around in the computer, taking computer more time to do it job. Head to filehippo.com download CCleaner (under Cleaning and Tweaking on the bottom of middle column), install and run it. I would advise to check all the boxes to have an extensive search to find more trash. And if you want to, you can set CCleaner to auto run and clean everytime you turn on your computer, this is what I do for my many computers and laptops using at home. In addition to CCleaner, use Disk Cleanup built-in into your Windows (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools), don't forget to check all the boxes before you start.
4) Defragmentation! After you have downloaded and installed and uninstalled, moving your files around, removed them, etc....spaces are left all over your HD (harddrive), then whenever you installing a new program, your computer will try to filling those spaces with your computer, the result: files of that program are scratter all over the HD, making it longer to retrieve its files, or even your documents. Defragmenting is located under the same folder of Disk Cleanup in System Tools. Defrag will take a few hours to complete for the first time of use, and it depends on how large your HD is. It is best to run it before you go to bed or before you go to work.
If you follow these steps, you'll be a happy camper for many years to come.

Naahh, there's easier and cheaper ways than those above. First, launch your Internet Explorer (the better browsers, e.g. Firefox, Netscape, Opera, etc. aren't accepted by this test--it's the only reason I keep it on my computer.) Then go to PC Pitstop's website--
www.pcpitstop.com
sign up, and run their test. It'll tell you what's wrong with the computer and how to fix it. They'll try to sell you programs to fix the problems with; but be careful. If you don't know about registerys, stop bytes, etc., they could be over your head, or useless. Let PC Pitstop tell you what's wrong (it's free), and bring those results back here and tell us; someone will help you resolve your problems.
Probably, though, you've caught a virus, spyware, or some other form of malware. They can be easy to get rid of, or some may be harder. Someone can usually get things running better, though. But first, find out what's wrong.
Good luck.

First and foremost, what kind of firewall do you have? What kind of anti-virus do you have? What kind of anti-spyware do you have?
The firewall is located in your Control Panel.
The antivirus program should also be located in the Control Panel.
The antispyware might be found in your Control Panel, but I'm not sure.
The anti-virus that I use on my computer is AVG and can be found at http://www.grisoft.com
The antispyware that I use is Spybot and can be found at http://www.spybot.com
I really like these products because they are totally FREE. The AVG has it's own firewall. The Spybot program blocks and detects spyware, adware, and malware.
