I think that everyone has the right to wear what they want as long as it does not interfere with anybody else's lifestyle. But as we know, the world can be unfair and first impressions count. So, dressing like goth or being a little to showy could give the wrong impression. So all in all, I think that you should read "A Field Guide to the Urban Hipster" by Josh Aiello. http://www.randomhouse.com/features/urbanhipster/ or www.broadwaybooks.com. It talks about all the stereotypes. They're divided into families, and has diagrams and statistics and everything.

I really think it depends where you live. If you are in an urban setting with a lot of gang activity, it probably would carry restrictions on colors if you didn't want to be associated with a gang. But for youth that live in rural or suburban areas without such activity, I don't think anyone gives color a thought.
The problem began when gangs started using color as a mark of membership. This is just another example of how criminal behavior makes life more difficult for the rest of us.

There are points where you're safe, and not projecting some dangerous behavior, and there are points where you go too far. Colors indicate what we what them to indicate- and you're not going to be able to control it for other people. if you wear red- I'll see what ever I'll see. But if you wear an enormous gold chain, pants that come up to your knees, and a shirt with a diamond stutted gun- I'll see something else. When it's colors, it's all just in my head, but when it's like the other- it's more intentional on your part. I do think we should take responability on what we project, but only to a certian point.

Well if you are wearing a local gangs colors, that would be unsafe right? They wouldn't like it because you are claiming to be in the gang and are not, and rivals would try and hurt you or worse.
Knowing what your gangs are is important in some urban settings, if there's gangs there.

I don't think it's the colors that make people think others are in a gang, I think it's the type of cloths they wear. For example, (no effence to the gang members) baggy pants that let their boxers show, baggy shirts, and hats that are turned to the side or something like that.

if people stop letting gangs have control this won't be an issue.
people shouldn't adjust their clothing to avoid gangs- this empowers gangs.
appearance can be a negitive thing. if you dress punk, ghetto, goth, or raver you tend to get profiled by security and police. sometimes you recieve inadiquate service while shopping.
but I wouldn't change how I look due to ignorant people. these people need to be reported . I know one of my hispanic friend's family reported when they were followed for being mexican, but I have another friend who had a security guard follow him through the whole library because he has pants with chains, a rock shirt, and a mohawk. he refused to report the guy. thus he empowered him

Well I am a youth myself and I feel like people get judged WAY too much for their clothing taste and though I am a prep I have an awesome friend who is goth and everyone thinks that she wants to kill herself or something but she acts exactly the same way that I do! I bet if I started dressing like her then people would say the same about me. I'm not positive if that answers your question but I had to get it off my chest.

I'm not sure why everyone believes in those stereotypes, but when I was in high school, it was against the dress code to wear a solid, white t-shirt. I thought it was ridiculous!

It's sad, but sometimes that is true. If someone wore the wrong brand of shoes in the wrong part of town they could be kiled. isn't it sad what is happening to our youth.?
