Depends. Usually the truth works. But, if it's just that you can't face another night talking to flatulent Henry and his dreary wife; then you'll have to think of something non-lethal, that can't backfire.
How about: "My front door lock is broken, so I'll have to stay in and guard the house".

just tell the truth, unless the truth is you lot bore me and i would rather stay at home and sit on my ****. then you will just have to lie, dont kid yourself about it you will be lying to friends, but maybe they only invited you out of politeness anyway and wont care wether you show or not.

Just explain briefly/summarily that you won't be able to attend to your host/hostess. You don't have to elaborate .. and be sure to extend your apologies for having to do so. Brief/simple is enough.
