There are a number of ways in which this happened.
For some workers, new technologies of machine production threatened their jobs and they responded by forming or strengthening unions and negotiating their rights in a changed workplace.
For others, new mechanical technologies and new ideas about organizing and supervising work (what is called "scientific management" or "Taylorism") led to workers resistance and in some cases strikes.
Probably though the most important is that the new technologies of the Second Industrial Revolution (c1860s to c1930s) were most successfully exploited by new types of business enterprises, giant corporations. To meet the challenge of these enormous new business organizations workers created or joined larger labor organizations.
