We have minimum wage laws, so there's a lower limit. A lot of people are quite happy staying on their present wage because the Government top-up low wages for families, and any significant increase could result in them losing benefits. Any pressure on employers to pay a higher wage is considered anti-business, something which the Government is very wary of. They would rather subsidise low wages with Tax Credits, Housing Benefits, and Council Tax Benefit.

If people are not prepared to work for the wages on offer, they have to bear in mind the fact that there are plenty of immigrants who will. If you are young, single, mobile and without responsibilities, it's easier to find work. It becomes much harder the longer you've been out of work, the older you are, if you have no independent transport and if you have children, very difficult indeed. So when people find a job, they tend to hang on to it.

Besides, doesn't job satisfaction figure in all this? If you are only dragging yourself to work every day for the money, you're losing out, even if the pay is fantastic. Find a job you enjoy and be the best you can at it. Makes life so much better.

Many teens work for low wages because that's all they can get. They don't have work experience or for that matter, any job experience.

Secondly, since a lot of people are now getting their Bachelor's degree, a high school degree means nothing, and a BS means average. In order to make "good money", most need to get either a Masters or a PhD. And its a catch-22 because tuition costs money, so students are in debt when they finish a BS (usually $10,000 to $20,000) so if they were to take a job, it would be usually under $40,000 with so much debt.

Typically because it's a second job, working around a shift job that brings in more money (but not enough) & my schedule doesn't leave me many options in terms of 2nd jobs.
Usually it's casual market research interviewing.

Ladies probably end up in low wage jobs after having children & wanting to work in a casual job that offers the flexibilty to, at a moments notice go "take care of the kids".

I do not work for a low wage, but I have in the past, when I was in college, I was taught to earn my way, and that a honest day's work was the way to go, not to expect handouts or charity.

I earned my degree, the hard work payed off, I now earn a six figure salary. There is no shame to low wages, temporarily, until you are able to do better.

I have more respect for the hardworking person with low wages than for one who lives off charity.

I get a decent amount of money for what I do, but sometimes the intangibles are more important than the money. Things like medical/dental/vision coverage, a good 401K, stock options can tip the scales in favor of staying even for a lower wage.

So that the rest of the country do not have to pay for other peoples idleness. Working is good for you and it gives you self respect. Other countries would not sustain idle people, they would be out on the street. Obviously some people are not able to work, but there is a vast majority who live off others.

i dont and i wouldnt.People should be paid what they are worth, and only accept low wages if they really enjoy the work, and are happy to be paid peanuts.we are all different, and peoples wages vary greatly.Think the national average wage is pretty poor though.

money is not the be all and end all.

I would rather work for low money with an easy job that have all the stress of a highly paid one. My happiness is what counts not the bulge of a wallet
