the immigration movement to the United States in the 19th century. If you were going to immigrate to another country (other than the United States), what country would it be and why?

I wouldn't.

There is no other country better than the United States. All who live here are very fortunate indeed.

(Though the British Isles and Australia come to mind!)

I'm not sure where I would go exactly, I know where I wouldn't go..Europe, Asia, Mexico, or the West Indies.

Why?

At the time (between 1800 & 1900), Europe's population was exploding to over 400 million people. That resulted in a scarcity of land for farmers to plant crops or people to live and industrial jobs were full. In the US the jobs were plentiful. Europeans were also religious persecution. Many Jews were driven out of Russia by organized attacks by govt. officials. So about 20 million people came from Europe alone.

Over 500,000 Chinese and Japanese people came to America because of the California Gold Rush, jobs building railroads or farming, and started their own businesses involving their culture.

About 960,000 people from Mexico & The West Indies came to America because there were few jobs to be had in these places and because of the industrial boom in America, there seemed to be promise for everyone. 700,000 of the people that came were Mexican. They came because there was a lot of political turmoil in Mexico. There also was very little farmland & that's what they were looking for.

Almost all immigrants came to America by steamship and most were placed in third class areas - or "steerage" - it was very dirty and by the time they got to America they were sick, some had even died. Now, remember - the Americans weren't placing them in these conditions, the people coming over had to buy the tickets they could afford, and third class was the cheapest. When they got to America they had to gain admission into the country. They had to go through either Ellis Island (in New York) which mostly controlled the Europeans, or Angel Island (in San Francisco Bay) which controlled mostly Asians. They had to have a medical examination and if they were sick like with say tuberculosis - they'd be sent back to where they came from. They were also interrogated & if they had a criminal back ground or were though to have ulterior motives, they'd be sent back. They also had to have at least $25.

I'm not really sure why you'd want to live in a different country back then, everywhere had their problems, especially not having enough jobs and problems with the government. We, however, were booming in the steel industry. Millionaires were made off of steel (i.e. Andrew Carnegie). There were also "politcal machine" or "political pyramids" that immigrants could get in on and work their way to the top - which really paid off.

ps: this all came from my US History book, so I know it's accurate. we just studied it this week.

mmm....it would probaly be Paris, France. But I like living in the U.S too much to permanently stay anywhere else. I like Paris because I think that would probaly be the perfect place to meet a guy, the city of love. Also it's such a beautiful place.

One of the Western European countries; either the UK (England specifically) or Germany or Sweden. Reason: good healthcare system, stable economy, beautiful countryside, nice people. Plus, it's where the history is.

I live in the U.S and I wouldn't move, but if I had to. I would probably move to Canada since it's closer. But I wouldn't mind the U.K, London looks very nice.
