The greatest warships based on career, design, or whatever to make them great. Mine (in no order):

Tirpitz: One of the most feared ships in history, The British would scatter convoys just at a word that this ship was missing.
Seydlitz: One of the greatest battlecruisers ever, overcame great amounts of damage.
Enterprise: Outstanding war career, need say anything else.
Emden: German cruiser of WW1, a war cruise unequalled in raiding.
Warspite: British battleship with such character and great career spanning 2 World Wars.
Yamato: while almost anti-climatic in its career its design was gigantic.
New Jersey: Best American battleship, fought in several wars, great career.
Illustrious: British WW2 carrier that absorbed tremendous damage yet fought in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific.
Graf Spee: German raider that tried to repeat the epic cruise of the Emden of WW1
Zuikaku: best designed Jap carrier, very active.

So what's your list?

I would also include the USS Monitor, the first ironclad warship with a revolving turret; the CSS Virginia, the first ironclad ship ever; the USS Shiloh, the first ironclad ship with more than one revolving turret; the CSS Hunley, the world's first submarine; the USS Nautilus, the world's first atomic-powered submarine, and the KMS Bismarck for obvious reasons.

Have to agree with the first poster when they suggest you know more about the subject than me. Yes I would probably put the Tirpitz and Yamato up there, but i'm surprised you left of HMS Hood and the Bismark.

If you are considering feared ships of their day, then you may also include Henry VIII's flag ship, the Mary Rose. I would also have put HMS Victory in there (although this ship my be just considered great due to the admiral who fought in her) But logically modern battle ships would have to be classed 'as the greatest of all time'.

You know much more than I do about the subject, but would you have included the Bismarck if she had survived her first mission?
