The best free firewall in my opinion is Zone Alarm, much better than mcaffee or Norton.

Try it out here:

Hello,

What ever you do, do not rely on the Windows built in Firewall as some users suggest, it simply is not enough. Of course, I am a bit biases as I have worked for two of the top security vendors in the industry and I have seen the comparison data first hand.

The best one is the free version of Zone Alarm, but it is the best as it offers the most configuration options which advanced users like. The paid version also contains an OS firewall which alerts you to kernel level events.

Comodo which another has listed is also getting very good reviews. I am anxious to give it a try.

Norton is good, but stay clear of their new "low alert level" settings that they advertise. Basically what they do is place their firewall in a lower security level state, "learn mode" which allows everything it does not know through. Basically this means that Norton will allow malware through and worse, continue to allow it through.

Comodo Personal firewall is the only firewall that passess all known leak tests. But you really need a firewall if you are using internet other than 56k. Firewalls will slow down your net connection on 56k and you dont get attacked on 56k connections because they are slow. So try AVAST! because it acts as a firewall and an anti-virus free of charge. If you do not have a 56k connection and have wireless or dsl or others than try Comodo firewall. its the best. its only downside is that it does not have a lot of reputation like zonealarm.
