check the following points...!

whether your sound controller is installed with proper device driver? if it is not install the proper driver. now a days some sounds chirps are need to install the high definition audio.

which OS you are using? and which sound chip set? some chip sets while putting the mic or speaker or head phone you need to configure it properly. while putting the mic in jack any pop up is coming? if its comes just see it properly and configure it.

first check mick is muted..go to advanced properties and configure it properly

Volume controls mute box checked? Plugged into the Mic sockets on the PC? Volume controls mic input slider at the top?

Run voice recorder (if installed) and play with volume controls until your voive makes the green line wavy.

Favorites are the mute check box and plugging the mic in the speaker socket.

If you're using a voicechat program you need to go into settings and manually select it, try clicking the sound icon at the bottom right of windows go to voice and manually select the proper device, otherwise there are several other programs that use a mic.
