I can not find any statistics, though I remember reading the number was terribly low.

I am not sure what you mean by invested. Do you mean the stock market or had money in the banks or had money invested in a business? Probably around 70% of the people had money in banks because there was no social security or insurance and usually no retirement plans. If you didn't save for your old age or in case something happened you were in a heap of trouble. The credit card hadn't come on the scene yet.

It was only 3% of households. In the late 1990s it was up to about 50%.
